Klaus Spies was born in Saarlouis, Germany. He traveled extensively through South America and Mexico where he first learned the art of goldsmithing. He pursued his craft in Berlin, Germany through the 80s under various goldsmiths and designers and in a collaborative jewelry studio in Kreuzberg. Klaus moved from Berlin to Chicago, IL in 1999 where he started Spies Design. Since then, Klaus has been exhibiting in numerous art fairs and galleries throughout the country. In 2008, he moved to Asheville in the mountains of western North Carolina where he now has a studio and showroom in the city’s lively downtown.
1980-86: Apprenticeship in Berlin, Germany with goldsmithing group ‘Vega’
1986-92: Self-employed jeweler, several exhibitions and trade shows, such as Tendence, Frankfurt; Ambiente Frankfurt; Blickfang Stuttgart and Hamburg
1993-99: Established Cardillac, studio/gallery for goldsmithing and design in Berlin, special exhibitions with guest artists. Goldsmithing classes for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.
1999-2001: After relocating to Chicago, worked as bench jeweler for different Chicagoland jewelers
2001: Completed diploma as GIA certified diamond grader
2002: Started Spies Design, a contemporary fine jewelry line
2008: Relocated to Asheville, NC where I run a studio and showroom in the downtown business district.
2002- 2016: Various national and international exhibitions and fine craft shows, incl. Smithsonian Craft Show, ACE Evanston, ACC Baltimore, Philadelphia Museum etc.
