Looking at a piece of jewelry created by Tricia Becker, you immediately note her original designs and attention to detail. From the interest in the surface of a gemstone, the play of light across mixed metals, fine craftsmanship, and use of unique materials clearly demonstrate skills that come with many years of experience.

Tricia began making and repairing jewelry as a child, using tools from her father’s garage. After graduating from a State University in New York with a BFA in Jewelry and Metals, she began apprenticing at a fine jewelry store who taught the essential foundations of precision fine jewelry making in. From there, Tricia attended New Approach School for Jewelers and took classes with master jewelers Blaine Lewis for advanced stone setting, Kate Wolf for wax carving and Jason Marchiafava for hand engraving and fabrication.

During this time Tricia won a scholarship for an intaglio engraving course, sponsored by the American Numismatic Association in Colorado Springs, CO.

Many art exhibits and juried art festivals were frequent over the years as Tricia lived in different places along the east and west coasts. Some of the highlights were Clothesline Festival in Rochester, NY, Gifty Holiday show at The Crucible in Oakland, CA and the Walnut Creek Wine and Art Festival in Walnut Creek, CA.

Her home studio allowed her to move with her work, and in each location establishing a diverse clientele offering custom made jewelry, mostly one of a kind engagement rings and wedding bands.

While living in California, Tricia started offering private and small group classes to people interested in learning basic jewelry techniques in her private studio. She was also teaching jewelry making at the industrial art school The Crucible in Oakland, CA. During her 4 years at The Crucible, Tricia saw a real need for advanced courses in stone setting and lost wax casting. Tricia revised the advanced stone setting course and along with another instructor, wrote an advanced casting class which filled each time it was offered.

Joining the various lapidary and mineral clubs in the many areas Tricia has lived, she learned invaluable skills as a gem cutter. Recently, Tricia attended an intense gem carving class with the internationally renowned and award winning lapidary artist Glenn Lehrer.

Currently, Tricia’s jewelry studio is based at Liberty Arts in Durham, NC. Her skill set includes soldering and assembly of all fine metals, laser welding, setting all styles of gemstones, offering custom CAD-CAM designs, wax carving, casting, and lapidary work. Casting classes are also available at Liberty Arts where Tricia teaches you how to carve and manipulate wax. Then using lost wax vacuum casting, you will melt metal in a crucible to pour into the flask.

Being an instructor has brought out a new level of integrity and interest to Tricia’s work. The often laborious and tedious details of fine jewelry, made way for elegant yet simple designs. The combination of gems and metal evoke subtle movement and play in her wearable metal art.
